Kaunas, Lithuania – August 20, 2024 – The 2024 FISU World University Championships were officially declared open yesterday by the Director of the National Sports Agency, Mindaugas Špokas, at a vibrant ceremony held at Vytautas Magnus University. The event marks the beginning of an exciting competition featuring student-athletes from 20 countries, including the USA, Australia, the Philippines, and more.
“Students are an essential part of sports. I am delighted to see them gather here from all over the world, and I hereby declare the 2024 FISU World University Championships open,” Špokas announced, emphasizing the importance of student participation in global sports.
The championships, organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), will take place from August 21 to 25. Established in 1949, FISU now comprises 164 national student federations worldwide. The organization’s mission is to promote physical activity among students, foster international unity, and cultivate values such as discipline and collaboration in a competitive environment.
“Welcome to Kaunas! I wish you not only a successful competition but also the opportunity to fully experience the beauty of our city,” said Vice Mayor Mantas Jurgutis during the opening ceremony.
Following the speeches, national teams proudly paraded their country flags along Laisvės Alėja, celebrating the dynamic and picturesque atmosphere of Kaunas.
“The 2024 FISU World University Championships in Kaunas is a significant achievement. This is the second event of this caliber in Lithuania, and we are proud that, in the coming days, Kaunas will be home to the best student pentathletes,” said Indrė Čelkienė, President of the Lithuanian Student Sports Association (LSSA), as she highlighted the significance of the event for student-athletes and the broader community.
” The 2024 FISU World University Championships are about competitive energy, but also about camaraderie, which brings people together and forges long-lasting friendships. We are very happy to bring this spirit to Kaunas,” said Marian Dymalski, Vice President of the International University Sports Federation (FISU).
Four days of action at the VDU Prezidento Valdo Adamkaus sports center kicked off today. The competition reaches a climax with the Mixed Relays on Saturday, August 24th.
